UFC 264 Embedded: Vlog Series – Episode 1

Stephen Thompson and Gilbert Burns ready for a

[seagulls cawing]

[thumping]

>> Again.

>> I know a lot of fans
and everybody’s talking

about how I deserve the title.

How everybody in the top five

has fought
Usman except for me,

but you know what I got a
tough guy in front of me

and not looking
past anybody at all.

So I got one
opponent in front of me,

that’s Gilbert Burns.

And with a good win over him,

I could possibly be
fighting for the title.

So I got to go out there and do

what I know that I can
do come Saturday night.

>> One-two-three.

>> Two years ago, I
fought Vicente Luque.

He’s actually
Gilbert Burns best friend.

Gilbert Burns was in the
Vicente Luque’s corner

during that fight,

ended up with an
unanimous decision.

Fighting guys ranked behind me.

Now, the UFC has
given me somebody

ranked in front of me,
the number two guy.

You know, I was on UFC 205
with Conor McGregor.

We broke all Madison
Square Garden records.

And here I am again, you know.

I’ve fought on some
really epic cards

and this is another
could potentially be

the best card of the year.

[thumping]

You know, early in my years,

my thoughts were different.

It was just being the champion.

It was just having that title.

And as I got older,

and as I’ve
trained with champions,

as I’ve trained
with Georges St-Pierre,

Chris Weidman, you know,

Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida,

as I’ve grown in this sport,

it’s not about the title.

To me, it’s about
bettering myself,

being the best martial artist

and improving myself,
my being,

mentally, spiritually,
physically.

And I think with that mindset,
the title will come.

>> One more, one more.

[ring blowing]

Good job, good workout.

And every Saturday, a
week before the fight,

we do like a fight simulation.

>> Alright, big dog,
let’s get to work.

Today we were doing a circuit
we call it UFC at IHP.

It’s hell on wheels, man, It’s
three rounds, five minutes,

non stop, last training session
of a training camp.

>> Top speed, top
speed, go, go, go!

Take him down, Gil.

>> We try to simulate
everything in terms of

sequencing, time,
a mental attitude,

everything he’s
gonna find in the ring.

We emphasize
psychomotor vigilance,

which is staying
alert while you’re tired.

>> That next.

Good diagonal!

>> We know that Stephen
Thompson is gonna be

on a bicycle.

So what we had to do
is create a motorcycle

for Gilbert to get on.

So we focused a lot
on lateral movements,

closing the distance,
closing the distance in Xs,

trying to stay
off the tee line

so he’s not a target.

[grunting]

>> It’s no secret, Wonderboy
brings that karate style.

And, you know and Gilbert
brings the jiu-jitsu style.

But the jiu-jitsu style
also has hands as well too.

So we want to keep
the power that he has,

keep the strength,
keep the conditioning.

He’s always had
a good gas tank,

and it’s literally one
of the oldest matchups

in the books:
karate versus jiu-jitsu

and on July 10th, we’re gonna
see what comes up on top.
