Team GB surprise and take gold – 4x100m Men’s Relay – Athens 2004 Olympic Games
The 4×100 metres relay is a moment that drives high expectations for Olympics fans all around. And the Athens 2004 Olympic Games final lived up to those expectations. Team USA were the favourites for gold before the race, as a dominant force in this event historically and a strong team with Shawn Crawford, Justin Gatlin, Coby Miller and Maurice Greene as the anchor. However, during the race, Great Britain surprised the world with a technically near perfect team effort, with smooth baton transition. Timed at 38.07 seconds, Jason Gardener, Darren Campbell, Marlon Devonish and Mark Lewis-Francis beat the United States by 0.01 seconds to take the Olympic gold medal. Completing the podium, team Nigeria took the bronze medal.
